Demonstrably Deviant Interview Series

Demonstrably Deviant: Issue IVAbout
Sometimes we meet members of DeviantART who are just plain cool. They leave critique, they make great art or write great stories, they participate in groups and are generally just active and fun to be around. They also don't get any attention because being cool means you don't need attention to keep being cool. This interview series is meant to give all of you a small glimpse into the minds of these demonstrably deviant members. Twice monthly, I'll interview one of these deviants and feature work from their gallery. If you'd like to see someone interviewed for this series, just shoot me a note  with the subject "Demonstrably Deviant".

Breaking in to Lit!Introduction

Literature has long been considered one of the closest knit communities on deviantART. As a result, some people find it difficult to "break in" to the Lit crowd. There are rumors of elitism, difficulty in getting exposure, and lack-luster appreciation for the incredible work that goes into writing a good piece of prose or a well structured poem.

If you look at a painting you can see amazing detail, great use of color, and the importance of the subject immediately. You know it came from the artist's imagination and that he or she had to spend hours translating that to a canvas. The tangibility of the work is right in front of yo
Be A Hero, Report a Miscat!Miscats: What are they? Why do they matter? How do they happen?
A "miscat" is a deviation that has been submitted to the wrong gallery, or mis-categorized, on deviantART. For example, literature does not belong in the photography gallery, even if there is a photograph supplied as a preview picture for the writing.

They matter for several reasons. Miscats make searching for specific types of deviations tedious, particularly if you are looking for newer submissions. A search of the Writing Tutorials gallery for popular deviations in the last 24 hours brought up four deviations, all miscats. Miscats also make the site disorganized and even hard

Dear Lit Community, Some Solutions:devdreamsinstatic: wrote an open letter to the literature community specifically addressing issues he feels are detrimental to the health of the lit world on dA. Many of his concerns have been voiced by others in the community in past years and finding solutions to problems like fragmentation, cliques, and "elitism" (what I would call trolling) is no simple task. If, indeed, solutions need to be found at all. Below are my thoughts on some of the problems discussed in :devdreamsinstatic:'s article. Feel free to share your thoughts and ideas in the comments. Let's keep this conversation flowing.

Problem #1: "Elitism" or Trolling

dA has eaten my life.

Journal Entry: Thu May 17, 2012, 6:14 AM

I apologize for the journal inundation the last couple days. I have finally had fairly large chunks of time available to work on dA, so I've been trying to get caught up on everything. xD

My to-do list looks like this:

April Results for SS [link]
Hiring blog for DLD [link]
Prize gathering for SS (started!)
Comments at CI
Folder discussion at EL
June theme discussion at SS
June contest discussion for DLD (started!)
Prize gathering for DLD (started!)
Post next Demonstrably Deviant interview
Catch up on inbox (hah, right)

Between all of that I'm trying to read at least a couple pieces from my watchlist each day (mostly so I can feature them at DLD :giggle:).

So, I could use some help from ya'll! I'd appreciate it very much if you guys could help spread the word about the Navigating DeviantART contest at #SolutionsSanctuary! You can find details here: [link] The contest is open until May 31st, and I really do not want to extend it if I can help it, but we haven't got a single entry yet. :noes: If you could all post a journal, or a poll, or even tweet it that would help! Also, please do enter the contest! :eager: I am not judging, so I might enter it myself if I find time between the rest of my to-do list.

Second, I am still gathering points for =DailyLitDeviations to have a contest in June! There's a donation widget at the top of the DLD page. Anything, even 5 points, helps a lot!

I'm not the only busy bee around here though. Check out what other people have been up to:

Results of the Literature Community Fundraiser!ABOUT THE FUNDRAISER
The 3rd Annual Literature Community Fundraiser has officially come to a close. While this year's fundraiser was not the resounding success of last year, most of that was due to a lack of marketing on my part. We still raised enough points to hand out two Super Group subs, which is more than enough to make it all worthwhile! That said, next year I plan to make more of an effort. Read the end of the article for more about changes coming to the fundraiser next year.

Username Changes Now AvailableDeviantART has been around for almost twelve years, and in that time, we've seen artists grow from hobbyists to students to professionals. As a member of any community, your identity can change and grow over time.

For years, we've been getting requests from the community asking for the ability to change usernames. We realize that as an artist, it's important to give you the ability to change your personal brand, just as you change your interests, skills, and art types.

How It Works

Deviants can now change their username in their Settings. To change your username, you must have an active Premium Membership.  (The reason there is a "fee" ass

Scientific American makes my inner geek happy.

Journal Entry: Wed May 16, 2012, 4:48 AM

Admittedly, I'm only about halfway through the whole thing. Going to take it with me on the bus today and finish it up. But the first article in it is a compelling support piece for Planned Parenthood. There's always been a lot of incorrect rhetoric claiming that Planned Parenthood uses federal funding to perform abortions, and that abortions make up the majority of Planned Parenthood's activities. Neither claims are true, as has been proven over and over again. As the article points out, Planned Parenthood is responsible for preventing abortions by making contraception and sexual education available to men and women of all backgrounds and thus preventing unwanted pregnancies. The idea that we should revoke funding for such a fundamental part of health care is insane, in my personal opinion, and may lead to an increase in STDs, unwanted pregnancies, backyard abortions, etc etc etc.

Then I flipped the page and was reading about water ice on Mercury which surprised me. I never thought of Mercury as being able to have water because of its proximity to the sun. Apparently the crater bowls have some areas of permanent shadow that allow water ice to form and stabilize. How cool is that? Next they'll tell us there's bacteria in the gaseous atmosphere of Venus. :eager:

The main article is about how bacteria in our bodies might be influencing more than our digestion. They might be influencing the way we develop, right down to our DNA. They call it the Ultimate Social Network. I haven't finished reading that article yet, as there's a lot of biological terms in it I need to look up (college biology was a long time ago). But it is pretty interesting so far.

And lastly, there's a great Bill of Rights for Cellular Users that everyone ought to read, if only to get an idea of how much your carrier is extorting you.

What's got your inner geek happy this month?

Lili

Falling Star I used to turn my back to the sun
not face the light of day
I used to soon go back to the moon
to later run away

I used to turn my back to the sun
and wait by the meadow
And I would watch the light going by
until I would see your shadow

Well I'm a falling star, burning up when finally shining
Because we've come too far...

I used to drink the water I'm now drowning in
I used to think my life was finally flowering
But the boat missed the shore, it's out of sight and out for more
I'm out of time, the sun has set, my only guide is a single star

But it's a falling star, burning up when finally shining
Because we've come too far, in
Swan Song The nightingales leave the tree
and fly out in the night
as i enter the garden
accompanied by candlelight

The tree bows and points
at the crescent moon
There were flowers here
just last afternoon

But my bare feet feel only snow
invisably red since I felt the rose
an owl looks at me, amazedly
and cries my name, faithfully

I don't wanna chase the nightingale
cause whatever I try I fail
running through the summer snow
I cant keep up with the longbow

Noon was yesterday
when the parrots
were taking up
the exact same spot

Now
it's the owl
long left behind me
cause i'm leaving the country, the calm tree, I run, flee, crash, brea
Sunrise over Austria Sun illuminates
only clouds behind summits
valley still awaits

Sun about to rise
summits just show golden glow
over creeks crysp clear

Also, I'm usually not a fan of Fractals, but I picked this member due to the gorgeous "Minimalist Tree" by plutonian-D that she feautured this morning. It opened my eyes to realising there are types of fractals I have never looked at, and I'm happy she picked it out. (: "

And finally, =wildrune11 says, "she needs a cuddle buddy. And she likes the ;) emote."

^Astralseed is Unique Because: =Vlorrie writes, "to start, one of the first things she does when she logs onto dA is check DDs. She's on top of her comments, and she's so easy to talk to. Some people (like myself) are a bit intimidated by such people - perhaps we're afraid they won't respond or won't take us seriously, but Astral has always been very kind and open. She has an Ask Me Anything Monday journal that she keeps updated, once again opening herself up to the entire community. Both her DD Suggestions favorite folder as well as her Accepted DD Suggestions folder are a pleasure to go through (she's got very good taste I might add). On top of all that, her art style is simply smashing!"

^lightningmonkey is Unique Because: ~IWasOnceLikeYou writes, "Trevor (or diego [or monkey]) is the first community volunteer's profile I've seen that deletes comments for aesthetic purposes. c: he is also on dA not for the conventional reasons, but to lurk, to make a mess, and to not end his reasons with periods.

I've recently had the honor to receive a DD suggested by him (thanks again!). He always features excellent deviations for DDs, I usually keep a look out for them (which isn't very hard thanks to his Lit Fortnightly article)."

*Kneeling-Glory adds, "everyone should know that Trevor was originally `GaioumonBatou, and that just about the time I finally figured out how to spell that, he switched accounts on me."

Lightbringer II  The blue lights hovered, held in suspension and holding the colony suspended, one moment stretching over many moments and many moments more until, slowly and finally, the stars began to fade, one by one by one, submerging the colony into its usual darkness and silence. Even so, a moment later, no one had moved, save for the quiet Kenta, slinking off the balcony and back to the hallway, back to work. Halfway down the hall, Kenta heard a clicking noise, and the clicks grew louder, second by second, until he reached the end of the hall and picked up the small receiver of a telephone mounted on the wall, pressing it gently to his ear. "This is K Adam I, first feeling this sunken heat, first
scraping this grain desert, first
sitting under verdant walls, I

first touching these rooted crags, first
tripping in the mountain's gloam, first
reaching this brackish fountain, I

first holding the ocean, first
drinking its salt poison, first
sinking to my knees, I

first trying to understand, I

first trying to speak

I
Sun Wukong I am rock-heavy, quiet, half-
minded, world-strong. The sun bursts
with my light, not the other way round.
This sky's my breath, this earth
my monkey fist. Past that, feet, my
feet, become what they scrape, and that
in turn becomes mine. The stars
pale to my fire-eyes, my golden sight,
I can strong-arm the cosmos. You won't
change these things, same as a five-pillar
cage could not. Mountains can't hold me
past five hundred years, and I'll play
tricks, even after. This adventure
makes us, not you, not me. Today, I am
rock-heavy, quiet, world-strong, and
empty, and this is defined through you.

And we give special recognition to *teaphotography, who was thorough, positive, and had a great time getting to know a lot of different hats! She's requested to receive points instead of a subscription, so she can donate them to other causes. How awesome is that?

Thanks for reading! And don't forget to enter May's Contest: Navigating DeviantART!

DLD Suggestion Guidelines

I am an admin for =DailyLitDeviations (again)! :la:

My Guidelines:

:bulletpurple: Only one suggestion per note please. It helps me stay organized.

:bulletpurple:Please write "DLD Suggestion" in the subject line of your note.

:bulletpurple: Please do NOT suggest the same piece to multiple DLD admins.

:bulletpurple: For prose, I am partial to creative non-fiction, essays, and editorials. For poetry, I love great imagery, universal themes, well communicated emotion, and fresh rhyme. I will, of course, read anything you send my way.

:bulletpurple: Please remember that DLD aims to feature quality. Therefore, writing that contains massive grammar or spelling errors will not be considered. (I don't consider intentional lack of capitals a grammar issue.)

:bulletpurple: You can suggest your own work!

DO THIS.
